Thing-slicing means to find a pattern quickly with a small amount of information. Drawing on all your relevant past experiences in a short amount of time to assess a situation and provide a conclusion is what makes thin-slicing not only easier and faster, but also more accurate than spending more time to draw a conclusion using adequate information.
Quality is usually over quantity because it is about how efficiently you use time and not how much time you put. Usually spending less than 5 minutes on coming up with a conclusion is the threshold. Studies find out the accuracy of a quick conclusion by comparing against the conclusion in which an extended time and adequate information were given.
Thus, thin-slicing is important because it enables you to make snap decisions without the need of spending a large amount of time in searching, analyzing, and concluding.
Note: Blink: The power of thinking without thinking by Malcolm Gladwell talks about this concept.
